How to Sell on Poshmark Successfully Step-By-Step

Selling on Poshmark can be a lucrative venture, whether you're looking to make some extra cash or build a full-time business. Success on the platform requires a strategic approach, from selecting the right items to list to engaging with potential buyers.

Follow this step-by-step guide to set yourself up for success on Poshmark.

1. Determine Your Niche

The first step to successfully selling on Poshmark is determining your niche. A niche allows you to focus your inventory on a specific product type, making it easier to attract a dedicated audience. It is better to master some selling categories than trying to sell a little of everything

Tips for Identifying a Profitable Niche:

  • Assess Your Interests: Start by considering what types of products you are passionate about or knowledgeable in. Selling items you care about can make the process more enjoyable and sustainable. Many sellers sell clothing simply because they love fashion.
  • Research Market Demand: Use Poshmark’s search features and explore trending categories to see what types of products are currently in demand. Look for niches with consistent sales and active buyers.
  • Evaluate Competition: While some competition is healthy, try to find a niche that isn’t oversaturated. This gives you a better chance to establish yourself as a go-to seller in that category.

By identifying a niche that aligns with your interests and has strong market demand, you can create a focused inventory that appeals to a specific audience, increasing your chances of success.

2. Download the Poshmark App and Create an Account

Once you've determined your niche, the next step is to get started on Poshmark by downloading the app and setting up your account. Poshmark is primarily an app-based platform, so having the app on your smartphone will allow you to manage your listings and interact with buyers on the go.

Steps to Download the App and Set Up Your Account:

  • Download the App: Head to the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) and search for "Poshmark." Download and install the app on your device.
  • Create an Account: Open the app and sign up by providing your email address, username, and password. You'll also be asked to fill out a short profile, where you can add a profile picture and a brief bio to introduce yourself to potential buyers.

💡Tip: Pick a username that stands out. Don’t use something like Yourname2005xo_. You want to brand yourself and for buyers to remember you!

  • Customize Your Settings: Take a moment to adjust your account settings, such as enabling notifications so you don’t miss any important updates or messages from buyers.

Setting up your Poshmark account is quick and easy. You can then start listing items and engaging with the Poshmark community right away.

3. Gather Your Items

Before starting selling, you'll need to gather the items you plan to list in your Poshmark closet. The quality and condition of your items play a significant role in how quickly they sell and how much profit you can make.

Steps for Gathering Items to Sell:

  • Assess Quality: Go through your wardrobe, accessories, and household items to identify products that are in good condition and have resale value. Items should be free of stains, tears, and excessive wear.

💡Tip: Don’t forget to ask your friends and family if there is anything they want to donate to your new business!

  • Prioritize High-Quality Brands: Items from well-known, high-quality brands tend to sell better on Poshmark. If possible, focus on listing items with a strong brand reputation and in demand.
  • Clean and Prepare: Make sure all items are clean, wrinkle-free, and presentable. Consider steaming or ironing clothing, and ensure that accessories and home goods are polished and ready for sale.

Gathering high-quality items and ensuring they are in the best possible condition will set the stage for a successful selling experience on Poshmark.

4. Take High-Quality Photos

Poshmark allows sellers to feature up to 16 photographs and a listing video!

Poshmark prefers stock images, modeled images, or well-lit photographs of your item on a clear hanger or dress form. Regardless of your photography method, the Poshmark algorithm prefers a plain white background for enhanced image searching on major search engines. This is why you see so many boring images of items on clear hangers on white walls- they perform very well on Poshmark.

Ensure your item is cleaned, wrinkle-free, and looking its best for picture day. Also, be sure to photograph everything; the front, back, brand and material tags, and any features or imperfections of your item.

Looks matter. There are awesome photo-editing programs that help you to enhance your photos. Vendoo has a background remover by PhotoRoom, so you can have perfect white backgrounds right in the sofware!

💡Tip: A good tip is to photograph your items as if you do not have a description, and describe your items as if you do not have photographs.

5. Create Detailed Listing Descriptions

Listing on Poshmark is straightforward. Poshmark provides a title field (80 characters), written description (1,500 characters), and boxes for category, quantity, size, brand, color, condition, style tags, retail price, and sale price. We recommend you execute all listing fields entirely to maximize searchability and exposure.

💡Tip: Not sure how to navigate style tags? We’ve got you covered in The Reseller’s Guide to Cores & Aesthetics Hashtags.

Do not underestimate the importance of your written descriptions on Poshmark. Poshmark offers incredible search engine optimization (SEO), with Posh listings being prominent upon search results in both Google and Bing. On Poshmark, every character in your listing is searchable.

Most purchases do not happen by chance or by frivolous news feed scrolling; many are a direct result of a buyer's search. The key is to maximize your descriptions to enhance your rankings and increase sales.

A Posh-perfect description includes:

  • What the item is
  • The style name or brand’s title of the item
  • Style Type and Features
  • Size and Size Type
  • Material Composition
  • Colors & Patterns
  • Relevant Measurements
  • Style Tags and Keywords

6. Set Your Pricing Strategy

Setting the right price for your items on Poshmark is crucial for attracting buyers and ensuring that your listings don’t sit unsold for long. Here’s how to approach pricing strategically to maximize your success on Poshmark.

Pricing is a science. You want to price low enough to yield interest but high enough to accommodate offers and yield a comfortable profit. Comparable prices, or “comps,” are a great tool for reference, although they can be deceptive.

💡Tip:  Learn more about my sales strategy and how I price my items for sale in this article about creating a pricing strategy.

Depending on your goals, you can choose from several pricing strategies that align with your selling approach:

  • Competitive Pricing: This strategy involves pricing your items slightly lower than or equal to similar listings on Poshmark. Competitive pricing is effective if you want to move items quickly and appeal to bargain hunters. This strategy is particularly useful for popular or trending items with many similar options.
  • Premium Pricing: If you’re selling high-quality or rare items, you might consider pricing them higher than the market average. This strategy works well for items in excellent condition, from luxury brands, or with limited availability. Premium pricing can attract buyers looking for specific pieces and willing to pay more for quality or rarity.
  • Bundle Discounts: Offering discounts on bundles is a popular strategy on Poshmark. You can price individual items slightly higher while encouraging buyers to purchase multiple items at a discounted rate. This approach increases your average order value and helps clear out inventory more quickly.
  • Gradual Markdown: Some sellers start with a higher price and gradually reduce it if the item doesn’t sell within a certain timeframe. This strategy can create a sense of urgency as buyers watch the price drop, waiting for the right moment to purchase.

When setting your prices, remember to account for Poshmark’s selling fees. Poshmark charges a flat fee of $2.95 for sales under $15 and a 20% commission for sales of $15 or more. Ensure your pricing allows you to cover these fees (and send and accept offers) while making a profit. I generally price 30-50% higher than my bottom line.

By carefully considering these pricing strategies and conducting thorough research, you can set prices that attract buyers while ensuring you achieve your sales goals. Balancing competitiveness with profitability is key to success.

7. Share and Promote Your Listings

Poshmark sharing is crucial to making sales. You can manually share your items by opening each one, clicking the "share" icon, and then sharing to your followers (and/or a relevant Poshmark Party if one is happening).

Sharing can be time-consuming, so use automated sharing software such as PosherVA. Use bots and automation software conservatively and at your own risk.

💡Tip: Delist and relist a handful of listings daily with Vendoo. This is different (and better) than the Poshmark "Copy" feature. Vendoo's delist/relist feature provides brand-new listings that receive all the exposure of an item being listed for the first time!

8. Manage Sales and Shipping on Poshmark

When you make a sale, Poshmark emails you a pre-addressed and pre-paid shipping label. Package your item securely, affix the label, and drop it off at a USPS location. Generally, the buyer pays for shipping (current rate $7.97). You can offer free or reduced shipping, and you pay the difference.

Poshmark shipping deals are incredible. For only $7.67, you can send up to 5 lbs to any U.S. territory. That's a steal! However, charging (or paying yourself) that much for only a few ounces can be quite frustrating with smaller items. Similarly, if an order is over 5 lbs, you must pay to upgrade the Poshmark app's label, which can be pricey.

Note: There is no self-ship option on Poshmark; you must use their labels.

9. Handling Returns on Poshmark

Resellers love the Poshmark Return Policy.

Poshmark does not allow returns unless the item is not as described (wrong item sent, undisclosed damage, not authentic, etc.). To attempt a return, a buyer must open a Poshmark case and submit photographic evidence to support their claim.

While other platforms have a reputation for “always siding with the buyer,” Poshmark is known for being fair and favorable to resellers.

10. Getting Paid on Poshmark

Getting paid on Poshmark is one of the most rewarding parts of the selling process, and understanding how the payment system works will ensure a smooth transaction experience. Once you’ve successfully sold an item, Poshmark’s payment process is straightforward, but it’s crucial to set up your payment methods correctly to avoid delays or issues.

After you sell an item, here’s how the payment process works:

  • Shipping and Confirmation: After you ship an order and the buyer receives it, they have three days to confirm that the item is as described. If the buyer doesn’t confirm within those three days, Poshmark will automatically release the payment to you.
  • Funds Availability: Once the buyer has confirmed the item or after the three-day confirmation period, the funds from your sale will be available in your Poshmark account. You can view your available balance in the “My Balance” section of the app.
  • Withdrawal Options: You can withdraw your earnings via direct deposit to your bank account or request a check. Direct deposits are typically processed within 2-3 business days, while checks can take longer to arrive by mail. It’s important to ensure your bank details are entered correctly to avoid any delays in receiving your funds.

Setting up your payment methods correctly ensures you receive your funds without any issues. Double-check that your bank account information, including your account number and routing number, is accurate to avoid errors during the direct deposit process.

Tips to Become a Successful Poshmark Seller

Listing is not all it takes to be a successful seller. Poshmark requires some TLC. Here are some tips to make more sales on Poshmark:

List Consistently

One key to success on Poshmark is maintaining a consistent listing schedule. Adding new items to your closet keeps it fresh and increases your visibility on the platform. When you list consistently, you’re more likely to appear in search results and catch the attention of active buyers. Additionally, consistent activity signals to Poshmark’s algorithm that your closet is active, which can lead to more exposure through the app’s discovery features.

Maximize Descriptions for SEO

Again, your Poshmark descriptions are important because every character yields in the Poshmark search engine and Google. Including all the words maximizes your chances of ranking in search results, receiving more exposure, and making more sales.

Promote Your Closet on Social Media

Promoting your Poshmark closet on social media can significantly expand your reach and attract more potential buyers. Using Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok, and other social media to drive sales to your Poshmark Closet will increase your traffic. Promoting your closet externally helps you establish a personal brand, making your closet stand out and attract repeat buyers.

Engage with the Poshmark Community

Engaging with the Poshmark community is essential for building your reputation on the platform and increasing your sales. Poshmark is a social marketplace, meaning that interaction plays a significant role in how your closet is perceived and how successful you become.

You can stay involved in the community by sharing others’ listings, joining Posh Parties, attending live sales, and connecting on social media.

Offer Bundle Deals and Other Discounts

Offering bundle deals and other discounts is a proven strategy to entice buyers and increase your sales volume on Poshmark. Buyers love getting a good deal, and by providing discounts, you can encourage them to purchase more items from your closet.

When someone adds an item to a bundle, drop a comment or send them an offer!

Provide Excellent Customer Service

Providing excellent customer service is crucial for maintaining high customer satisfaction and ensuring repeat business on Poshmark. Positive interactions with buyers can lead to good reviews and “love notes,”  which are vital for building your reputation on the platform.

Responding promptly, describing items adequately, pricing fairly, and shipping quickly are the best ways to facilitate positive customer interactions. By prioritizing excellent customer service, you can create a positive shopping experience for your buyers, leading to higher sales and a stronger reputation on Poshmark.

A Poshmark Dictionary: Common Poshmark Terms

If you are brand new to Poshmark, you might be confused by the many acronyms in your newsfeed. Here is a guide to navigating the Poshmark terms.

  • CCO: “Closet Clearout” These are frequent promotional days whereas Poshmark hosts a limited time offer; On CCO days, sellers can drop their prices by at least 10% and Poshmark will cover reduced shipping and notify likers of the deal.

  • OTL: “Offer to Likers.” You can make an offer to likers by reducing your price by at least 10%. This is the best way to effectuate sales.
  • PFF: “Posh Friend Forever” An adorably corny play on “BFF” (best friend forever) used to describe your Poshmark friends
  • Bundle: When a buyer creates a bundle, they can purchase more than one item at once to be shipped together. Most sellers offer greater discounts on bundle purchases.
  • Self-share: is a way to refresh your items in the newsfeed and search engine. For best results, this should be done at least once daily. See below for more information about Poshmark sharing requirements.
  • Community Share: Share other Poshmark sellers' listings with your followers. This is highly encouraged on the app but generally regarded as an unnecessary waste of time by experienced Poshmark sellers.
