How to Start Selling on Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is a fairly new but extremely popular platform. Over the past few years, it has grown rapidly in popularity, due to the fact that Facebook is such a social media powerhouse. They picked up where platforms like Craigslist and OfferUp left off and gave their users a convenient way to buy and sell. 

In this blog post we’d like to talk about how to start selling on Facebook Marketplace in just a few steps.

Initially, Facebook Marketplace was designed for local transactions, which it is primarily still used for. However, they also have the ability to ship items from buyers to sellers which creates a massive market. 


Steps to Sell on Facebook Marketplace: 


Creating a Listing: 

Now, let’s talk about how to sell an item on Facebook marketplace. You can start by logging into your Facebook account and clicking the marketplace icon and by going to the following link:


On the left tab you’ll see a button that says “Create new listing”. You’ll now see multiple listing options, but as resellers, we should select “item for sale”. You have the ability to upload up to 10 photos and then fill in a few detail fields about your item. 


Once you’ve selected your location, Marketplace also gives you the ability to hide this listing from your Facebook friends before you publish it. The listing form also gives sellers the option to list as a single item, which means you only have one, or a list as in stock, which means you have more than one of the same item. 



Once you publish your item, you have the option to edit it or delete it at any time. 

Receiving Offers: 

When buyers are interested in your listing, you’ll begin to receive messages from interested buyers through the Messenger app. If you choose to conduct a local sale, you will need to log back into Facebook marketplace and mark the item as sold.

Shipping Your Item: 

If you decide to ship your item, you will have the option to purchase a label through Facebook or ship the item on your own. One of the great things about Facebook marketplace is that there is only a 5% fee on shipped orders, which is much lower than some of the other popular marketplaces. 

Receiving Your Payments: 

After the buyer has received the item you’ve shipped, you have to wait five days before your payment is initiated by Facebook. Some sellers have been unhappy with the long wait time to receive their payments, but overall Marketplace has been highly praised by online resellers. 


Now, let’s get into some tips we have found helpful when selling on Facebook Marketplace: 

  1. Check your “Message Requests” folder - This folder was created to prevent users from receiving spam messages, however, some messages from potential buyers might end up there. So our advice is to regularly check your message requests folder. 
  2. Price your products right - If you’re having doubts of how to price items on Facebook Marketplace just do some prior research by looking up some similar items to the one you’re going to offer, this will give you a good idea  of what you should charge for them. 
  3. Make sure to take good photos - Having good photos of your items in clean, white backgrounds is always a plus. Make sure to highlight important details of your items allowing users to see exactly what they would be purchasing. 
  4. Engage with the community around you - Try to look for and join reselling groups. This is a great way to learn more about the community, talk to other fellow resellers and ask questions regarding Facebook Marketplace.
