Types of Online Sellers
The word "online sellers" covers all kinds of sellers online (hence the name!), each with its own strategies and goals.
Resellers
If you've landed on this page, chances are you're a fellow reseller, just like me. We're the ones who dive into the world of thrift stores, liquidation sales, garage sales, and other hidden gems, hunting for second-hand, vintage, or one-of-a-kind items. Our playground? Online marketplaces like eBay, Poshmark, and Mercari bring these treasures to a new life and a new audience.
Being a reseller isn't limited to an individual working out of their basement. In fact, many resellers operate on a much larger scale, running their businesses from warehouses and managing teams of employees. This demonstrates the diverse and expansive nature of the reselling world.
Retailers
These big players usually deal in brand-new products they manufacture or source from suppliers and operate on a grander scale than typical resellers. They offer various products, focusing on variety and volume (think of 1,000+ sales per day). You'll find these retailers prominently on platforms like Amazon or running their own e-commerce websites, showcasing their extensive product range.
Dropshippers
A dropshipper is a type of online seller who doesn't keep the products they sell in stock. Instead, when a dropshipper sells a product, they purchase it from a third party – usually a wholesaler or manufacturer – who then ships it directly to the customer. Dropshippers typically focus on selling brand-new products, often through their own e-commerce websites. While they may be found in niche marketplaces like Poshmark or Mercari, it's important to note that these specific platforms generally do not permit dropshipping operations.
What's the biggest differences between resellers and retailers?
- Most resellers typically don't carry identical inventory or stock-keeping units (SKUs), which makes it harder to scale volume-wise. The exception here is if you work with a wholesaler and have multiple units of the same item. (P.S. Vendoo supports multi-quantity items!)
- Retailer storefronts are seldom found in niche marketplaces like Mercari, Poshmark, Etsy, etc., because they are either not allowed or require manpower to manage these platforms.
Which Seller Software Tool is for You?
If your inventory consists of unique and used items, opting for Vendoo becomes an obvious choice. Even if you have your own e-commerce site, like Shopify, it's crucial to remember that major global marketplaces maintain stringent guidelines regarding the sale of used products.
Hey, if you're listing a ton of items each month, around 1,000, and the thought of dragging all that into Vendoo feels like a massive headache, don't sweat it! Vendoo's got this amazing white glove service that takes care of everything – from setting you up to handling your listings and store maintenance. They've totally got your back!
